First mission - Wolverines
September 2022
It's a nice, pleasant and peaceful early autumn morning.
The last few weeks have been very stressful for Helmut Kohl, the first chancellor of a reunited Germany. But,
as they say, with great power comes great responsibility. Regardless of the views of the likes of Thatcher, it
is time to put the terrible past behind the German people and look forward to a bright future of peace and
prosperity.
After all, the reunification of Germany was the least of the Soviet Union's problems. The state was plagued by
internal political struggles and corruption, one could never know which power hungry dog would be next, who
would climb the party ladder. What did it even matter at the moment? With a reunified Germany firmly
entrenched in NATO and supported by all its members, there was very little reason to fear retaliation. As
unpleasant as the Soviets were, in the last couple of years they had begun to show signs of wisdom and logic,
seemingly pursuing a policy of mutual cooperation and easing the tensions that had built up over decades.
It is almost dawn. Time to get out of bed and start another busy day.
As Kohl headed to the kitchen to turn on the coffee machine, someone rang the doorbell. It was his personal
assistant, and apparently it was urgent. He brought a letter bearing Kolya's name and the official stamp of
the USSR. The letter read as follows:
To the First Chancellor of Germany:
Congratulations on your recent political success, I am sure you are very proud of yourself and your people now
that you no longer have to deal with us. But in your arrogance you seem to have forgotten with whom you are
dealing.
In violation of our previous mutual agreement you have decided to illegally secede from the USSR, jeopardizing
our national security and committing an act of high treason. As a result the USSR declares war on Germany,
military action will begin at 4:30 on October 24, 1990.
Signed,
Y. V. Andropov
General Secretary of the CPSU Central Committee
Chairman of the Presidium of the USSR Supreme Soviet
